FURNITURE / ORDINARY HAND TOOLS
A handle
that moves.
For a wooden drawer with an accessible screw-fixed handle. The drawer and handle must be sound enough to inspect.
Check the object first
Remove the drawer if its maker’s instructions allow it. Set it empty on a stable, clear surface. Find the screw head inside the drawer and check which part moves when you gently hold the handle.
A cracked drawer front, a split handle, an inaccessible fitting or an attached powered lock needs its maker’s repair route. Stop here if the fitting differs from the card. You should not have to force the drawer to reach a screw.
- You will need
- A screwdriver that fits the head, a cloth and a small dish for loose fittings.
- Check separately
- The correct screw type and length. Retain the original fittings until their condition has been reviewed.
The card
Look at the head
Clear the view with a dry cloth. Match the driver tip to the screw head. If the tip slips or cannot seat, stop and ask for a fitting review.
Support the handle
Keep the handle aligned from outside the drawer. With the other hand, turn the accessible screw gently clockwise. A handle with two fixings may need small alternating adjustments.
Stop at contact
Stop when the handle sits against the drawer front. Extra force can crush the wood or damage the thread. If the screw keeps turning without settling, the fitting needs repair.
Try it empty
Replace the drawer according to its maker’s instructions. Open and close it without loading it. Check the fixing again if the handle moves. The card ends here; it gives no torque figure for an unknown fitting.
WORKSHOP BOOK / AMIRA HADDAD
The first attempt
used the wrong tip.
Amira Haddad brought a loose drawer handle to an Unwritten workshop. The screw head was intact. She selected a smaller driver, noticed it turning inside the recess and stopped.
On the second attempt, the wider tip seated. The handle settled against the drawer front before the screw felt difficult to turn. The workshop book retained both attempts.
Amira’s next page was left open for checking the handle after use. Her Presentia shift did not require a repair certificate.
