Provenance & Authentication

Human, or nothing.

The market for pre-synthetic profiles depends on one promise: a human wrote it. Every listing on Patina passes the Patina Provenance Review before it reaches the exchange. Fewer than one profile in nine is accepted.

Method

The Patina Provenance Review

  1. Era check.

The profile must have been created and actively used before 1 January 2023. Activity after that date is reviewed separately and may reduce eligibility.

  2. Originator check.

The profile must have been operated by its human originator. Accounts run by social media managers are accepted with a note in the lot record.

  3. Imperfection check.

Human writing contains inconsistencies that synthetic writing rarely reproduces. Patina checks for them.

  4. Chain of custody.

Every transfer since acquisition is recorded and visible on the listing.

Synthetic vintage submissions rejected to date

The threat

Synthetic vintage

The most serious threat to the market is synthetic vintage: profiles generated recently and back-dated to resemble the human era. They are often flawless, and that is how they are caught.

Notice

Profiles processed by human-imitation services are not eligible for review, including services that add typos, delays or signature lines to synthetic text.

Members are reminded that imperfection can be manufactured. Provenance cannot.

Record

The certificate

Accepted profiles receive a Patina Certificate of Human Origin, recorded with the lot. It states the platform, snapshot year, originator status and review date. Certificates are not transferable separately from the profile.
