Look at the fitting.
From inside the empty drawer, find the screws holding the handle. Check that the head is intact and the handle has the matching fixing points. If parts are missing or damaged, stop and identify them before continuing.
A short guide for an ordinary screw-fastened drawer handle. Read the whole page before beginning.

Empty the drawer and put it on a stable surface. This guide concerns a plain furniture handle with screws accessible from inside. It covers no electrical device, load-bearing fitting or locked mechanism.
Stop if the wood is split, the fastener differs from this arrangement or the handle will not sit flat. A manufacturer-specific guide takes precedence over this ordinary example.

From inside the empty drawer, find the screws holding the handle. Check that the head is intact and the handle has the matching fixing points. If parts are missing or damaged, stop and identify them before continuing.
Hold the handle against the outside while loosening each screw by hand. Put the screws in the tray. Notice which screw came from which fixing point.
Lift the handle away. Wipe away loose dust with a dry cloth. Do not enlarge the holes or pack damaged wood to make an unsuitable screw fit. A split fixing needs a different repair.
Hold the handle flat in its original position. Start each matching screw by hand, then turn the fitted screwdriver until the handle sits securely. Do not force a screw that binds or keeps turning without holding.
With the drawer still empty, check that the handle does not move at its fixings and that the drawer travels freely. If anything shifts or catches, stop and inspect it again before loading the drawer.
The checklist records your marks in this page only. It is not an inspection or guarantee, and refreshing clears it.

A wrong turn is not evidence that you should never try. It may be evidence that this is the wrong guide for the fitting.
