A Milan household has bought a manual light switch after its automated home left the residents with nothing to do. Turning on the lamp now requires someone to cross the room.

Tactile supplied the switch for a Plainworks lamp. A person must move it by hand. Veridia Energy confirmed that this would have no real effect on the reliability of the electricity supply.

One resident crossed the room three times to check that the job was still there. The household said it now had a small decision to make in the evening.

Serra Vano, a Milan design house that sells deliberately inconvenient objects, said its products often let the owner make a gesture without getting the expected result. This switch turns the lamp on.

The lamp does not remember preferred settings. The home has noticed that the residents spend longer beside it.
